Alcohol and Substance Abuse
This course examines the etiology, evaluation, treatment and prevention of psychoactive drug abuse. Students differentiate between use, abuse, dependence and addiction of alcohol and chemical substances. The class explores patterns of abuse, family dynamics, community resources and treatment options. Domestic Violence An overview of the dynamics and treatment of spousal abuse and domestic violence. Students explore the causes of battering relationships. The physical and psychological impact violence has on victims, children, family and society is examined. Crisis and Trauma This course reviews the psychological, biological and social origins of violence and how crises, violent events and natural disasters impact the individual. Students learn to utilize crisis intervention techniques, identify when and how to triage. Child/Human Development The student focuses on concepts important in prenatal development, cognitive and social factors in childhood and adolescence, effective parenting, and personal growth through the lifespan. Understanding Loss, Grief and Mourning An overview of the research exploring loss, grief and bereavement. The nature and expressions of bereavement, social and cultural variables are explored. Students examine how a person’s grief can be affected by their cultural and religious background, coping skills, mental history and support systems. Bullying and Truancy A study of bullying and truancy in both educational and workplace settings, from cognitive, neuropsychological, developmental and clinical viewpoints. Attention is paid to patterns of bullying, family dynamics, treatment, client education and intervention techniques. Internet Addiction Class The course covers addictive internet based behaviors such as pathological gambling, gaming and other commercial and interactive social media sites, such as Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and Amazon. Excessive and harmful use of online shopping, chatting, texting, sexting is examined to establish a baseline of social media addiction. Anger Management This course reviews anger management within our culture. Students examine anger management from cognitive, neuropsychological, developmental and clinical viewpoints. The course looks at anger management across the lifespan, as well as variations in gender and cultural expressions of anger. Special attention is paid to anger management as it relates to the home, school and workplace, family dynamics, modalities of treatment, client education and community resources. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy C.B.T is the ideal research-supported, short-term therapy. The course trains the student to systematically assess individuals and implement cognitive behavioral treatment interventions to resolve symptoms. Understanding and Treating Anxiety This course reviews anxiety disorders and common coexisting conditions, such as depression, eating disorders and insomnia.
